LOWTON Specialist Sports College is the new name for Lowton High School.

With the new title comes a renewed determination to provide high quality learning opportunities for all sections of the community.

Adults in particular, are being encouraged by the school to explore a mixture of skill-based short courses as well as the more traditional academic courses.

The non-vocational strand of the new programme is targeted at new learners over the age of 19.

The courses are offered free of charge and will provide opportunities to learn new skills through participation in activities such as aerobics, pilates and flower arranging. More practical support is also available in areas such as the use of digital cameras, the conversational skills of Spanish and French.

The vocational strand of the programme is open to all adults and focuses upon the more traditional academic courses which can help individuals to access their ideal job, go onto higher education, gain promotion or support a return to work.

Courses will normally run for 30 weeks and carry a charge against which concessions are available for those receiving benefits. The opportunities available in this part of the programme range from aromatherapy and basic first aid, through to cake decoration and garden design.

More details are available from Stephen Toole, the Community Director (01942 767040) or attend one of enrolment evenings scheduled in school on Monday, September 20 or Tuesday, September 21 (5-8pm).

In addition to the learning and skills programme, people are invited to access the range of specialist facilities at the school, capable of supporting sport, music, drama, art, general meetings and classroom based activities.

Anyone wishing to use the facilities, including the new floodlit astro-turf due for completion early in 2005, should contact Stephen Toole.
