ATHERTON Collieries had an up and down weekend in the North West Counties League, losing 5-1 in the Potteries on Saturday against Stone Dominoes but having an excellent 4-2 home win over newly promoted Formby on Monday.
The 5-1 away defeat flattered Stone but Colls had only themselves to blame. After Nick Fisher had given them an early lead they were let down by defensive mistakes.
What a transformation two days when they deservedly beat Formby after going a goal behind on six minutes. Mark Jones equalised with a fine solo goal on 10 minutes and Dave Conlon made 2-1 just before the interval. Nick Fisher added two more in the second half and Formby got a late consolation.
On Saturday Alsager Town visit Alder House in the FA Challenge Cup.
