AN electrical fault is believed to have started a fire at a Burnley engineering works last night.

The blaze at A and E Engineering, Old Hall Street, started on the ground floor about 9.15pm.

Four crews from Burnley, Padiham and Nelson arrived at the fire at the precision engineering company and found it heavily secured.

Hydraulic equipment usually used in car crashes was used to force entry to the premises - which contained volatile gas cylinders.

The fire was confined to the middle section of the ground floor which was destroyed.

Sub-officer Eddie Steel said an electrical fault with the heat sensor on a grilling machine is believed to have caused the fire.

He said: "We managed to stop the fire spreading either side and above though the middle part was gutted.

"When we arrived we did not know there were cylinders in the building and were a bit concerned about them.

"But we made the decision to be aggressive in fighting the fire from the inside and it paid off."
