CARING for others is a real family affair in the Cross household.

Former nurse Kevin, of Walker Avenue, Whitefield, is to undertake a gruelling 100k bike ride in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care along with his 17-year-old daughter Sarah.

Kevin (46) now works for Pennine Care NHS Trust as governance manager for Bury Mental Health Services and was inspired to take up the challenge by his wife Liz.

Liz is a Marie Curie nurse and her dedication to patients and their families coping with cancer has given Kevin the inspiration to raise vital funds for the charity.

Kevin said: "I want to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care because of Liz's involvement over many years.

"Liz has helped a great many patients and their families cope with cancer and I know from the expressions of thanks that Liz has received from them, that her efforts have been truly appreciated.

"I am also aware of what a struggle it can be for any charitable organisation to raise funds for all the work they do. So, doing anything that can help to raise money or awareness has to be a good thing."

After his family, which includes son Johnathan (16), bought Kevin a bicycle for Christmas he has been putting in some pedal power but just for fun.

It was Kevin's brother-in-law, Mark Johnson, that encouraged him to take on the Manchester 100k on Sunday, September 5.

Kevin said: "Mark's friend told him about it as he has two family members who have recently recovered from cancer. Sarah and I have been busy training to get fitter for the ride and also to raise as much sponsor money as possible. We're both really looking forward to having a great day out for a great cause, even though I'm sure we'll both be aching all over afterwards."
