COUNCILLORS may ask a Nelson-based company with a history of noise nuisance to apply for planning permission to erect a screen to minimise disruption to residents.

The Nelson committee is recommended to request Decopart apply for planning permission to build an acoustic screen at its factory in Edward Street.

The move comes because the company failed to limit noise disruption to residents in Regent Street, following planning permission to extend the factory.

In 2003, councillors passed the application despite residents in Regent Street, Edward Street, and Lansbury Place, complaining about noise.

A condition of approval was that the company, which makes products for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, would limit noise levels.

A report to the Nelson committee says the company has resolved issues relating to Lansbury Place, Lee Road, and Edward Street, and Decopart is considering building a four-metre barrier to reduce noise.

It concludes: "The proposal for an acoustic screen should meet the requirements for noise reduction and one clear option would be to encourage the company to pursue this course of action."

The committee will discuss the proposal when it meets at the town hall on Monday at 7pm.
