PLANS drawn up by Hyndburn Council to deal with travellers' unauthorised camps has been welcomed.

The move follows recent problems on the former Karrimor site, Petre Road industrial estate, in Clayton-le-Moors; on land along the King's Highway, near Huncoat Quarry, and in Bradshaw Street, Church.

Under the strategy, travellers moving onto unauthorised sites will be presented with a code of conduct outlining how to behave.

It also sets out the procedure the council and police will follow in the eviction procedure, if it becomes necessary.

County councillor for Hyndburn, Jean Battle, who recently helped deal with problems caused by travellers in Bradshaw Street and King's Highway supports the guidelines.

She said: "I am extremely pleased that the council has pulled its finger out and done something. It is extremely important to have a strategy in place to deal with this kind of problem."

But she added more sites should be available in the borough for travelling communities.
