CORRESPONDENT Derek Ryder plainly is a Tory supporter and has lived through the same times as myself.

Without doubt our worst Prime Minister, a fact which he carefully glosses over, was Margaret Thatcher who allowed this country to become "dispirited" due to her policy of "divide and rule", the law of the jungle and the weakest going to the wall.

She may have broken union power, but she declared in 1980 that there was "no such thing as society". Many years followed with more than three million unemployed, high interest rates, the break-up of families, the doubling of crime and the ostracism of single mothers. Add to all that a grave under-investment in public services and schools.

Now, thanks to Tony Blair and this government, society is being restored, new hospitals and schools are being built, there are more police and more hope for the future!
