I AM so glad that "Ceeaitch" (Letters, August 20) has plumped for consideration against only efficiency in public policy.

I just hope his conscience is as clear about his voting record these 50 years as is his brilliant vision, the vision that did not see all the other states in Europe represented with regions on EU maps.

Our Labour Government has provided authorities with funds to repair every school and hospital roof. Even Whitefield police station at last has a decent roof. Understandably the streets have had to wait but given the quantities of tarmac and road safety features our council has laid these last four years I know which way I am voting in order to continue the refurbishment.

City "fat cats" have been putting their fingers on company turnover for decades. The council leader is effectively a full-time job paid at the average rate for all municipal jobs. If anybody were to invite a private sector tycoon to head a private company turning over nearly £400 million per annum for a junior teacher's salary there would be loud laughter and louder door-slamming! Compared to business, councils are poor and honest.
