IT WAS A fantastic Bank Holiday weekend for Fleetwood who picked up 27 points from their two games and moved 10 points clear at the top of the Northern Premier League table with two games remaining.

On Saturday they brushed aside Leyland Motors on a track that was difficult for run scoring. They made a modest 130-9 but this proved to be 50 runs too many for Motors who were brushed aside for a mere 80.

It was a superbly crafted 40 from Michael Clinning that took Fleetwood to their final total as he withstood everything Motors could bowl at him until David Makinson kept one low to defeat his forward prod.

But his 81-ball innings that contained four fours, itself a good achievement on an extremely damp outfield, had seen his side to 113-5. There was 19 from both Doug Marillier and Andrew Clough and a swift 10, including two boundaries, from Steve Hill who then set his side on the victory trail by trapping opener Richard Rounding leg before wicket without a run on the board.

Motors recovered to be 62-2 but then sensationally lost their last eight wickets for just 18 runs. Dave Fish took 5-23 to take his wickets tally to 62 for the season and James Ellis had two smart stumpings as only Faruk Patel, 25, and Atif Ashraf, 28, reached double figures in the Motors' final total of 80 all out that condemned them to defeat by to runs.

On Monday it was once again very damp when the visitors were Blackpool who batted first and made 124-9 from a reduced quota of 44 overs. Fleetwood needed only 33.4 in reply to reach 125-2 and achieve victory by eight wickets.

Blackpool had Tim Barry to thank for their total for he made 46 in 84 balls with five fours before Adam Sharrocks superbly caught him at extra cover off Fish.

Steven Croft only made 18 but he did pass 1,000 League runs for the season, no mean achievement at all but he was out when he attacked Marillier only for Ellis to stump him. Marillier went on to take 6-29 from 16 overs of controlled off-spin as Blackpool lost their way mid-innings and closed on 123-9.

John Wright made 18, Sharrocks an excellent 30 but it was Clinning, once again, with 39 not out, and Marillier, 25 not out, who saw Fleetwood home by eight wickets at 125-2 with 11.2 of the final 20 overs remaining.

On Saturday Croft monopolised the Blackpool scoring at Stanley Park when he made 126 not out from 192-3 that was sufficient to defeat Morecambe by seven wickets as the visitors had made 189-9 with Justin Kreusch taking 5-47.

St Annes' game at Leyland was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Saturday and they defeated Preston by eight wickets at Vernon Road on Monday as Jimmy Adams and Danny Hagen both made half-centuries.
