BACUP Borough manager Brent Peters has tried to entice former Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United and Burnley defender David May out of retirement.

Peters made the bold move ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup preliminary round clash with neighbours Chorley at West View, when six current Borough players will come up against their former club.

But central defender May seems unlikely to take up the offer.

Peters said: "He seemed adamant that his mind was made up about retiring, but my final words to him were, 'you're a long time out of this game'.

"He has a business interest, but getting him to come to Bacup is still something I might pursue because we're on his doorstep, so he wouldn't have a lot of travelling to do.

"I know other non-league clubs have enquired about him."

Meanwhile, stand-in Chorley boss Micky Graham knows his side must become more clinical at both ends of the field if the Magpies are to avoid an embarrassing exit at West View.

Monday's 4-3 defeat at Woodley Sports - Chorley's third in four UniBond Division One games - was a tale of sloppy defending and missed chances and Graham has threatened changes for tomorrow.

"I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to get results," said Graham, who's been in temporary charge whilst John Hughes has been in America.

"Football wise, we've been good in patches but we haven't shown enough bottle so maybe we need more experience in certain positions."

Graham is hoping to bring in three new faces before the weekend with a midfielder and a left-back thought to be his top priorities.

Former Bacup striker Dave Gray could also be handed a recall against his former club in place of the struggling Matt Swailes, who may benefit from a spell out of the firing line.

"We're creating chances so that's not a problem," said Graham, who hands the reins back to Hughes after tomorrow's game.

"It's stopping the goals at the other end which is more of a priority right now."

Graham has signed young wide player Paul Nelson from Sheffield Wednesday, but he is unlikely to figure tomorrow.
