SOCCER fan Francis Fletcher netted £28,000 on last week's football results -- for a £1 stake.

The 76-year-old, from Chesham, Bury, guessed the outcome of 15 matches.

But far from being on the edge of his seat for the deciding result, Francis had taken his eye off the ball.

The Liverpool fan, who has done fixed odds betting for the past 30 years, thought that bet-clinchers Kilmarnock would be playing on Monday after correctly predicting the results of 14 games played on the Saturday.

In fact, they had played a day earlier and Kilmarnock came up trumps, beating Dunfermline 1-0.

It was after listening to his own team's match on the radio that the retired decorator found out he had bagged a big win himself.

He said: "I thought about what a good thing it was but didn't want to get too excited until I had checked at the shop to make sure."

When he strolled across to his local Tote bookmakers at Chesham precinct, Francis found well-wishers there to give him a cheer.

He said: "When I got there they were already waiting behind the counter because they had the coupon, but didn't know who it was.

"They all know me there and they were delighted for me."

Along with his cheque, Francis was presented with a replica Kilmarnock shirt embossed with the name of striker Danny Invincible, who scored the Scottish club's winning goal.

Francis is now adding to his holiday plans in Blackpool and Weston-Super-Mare and planning to buy a new car.

He has also attracted interest from national newspapers as a football tipster.

Tote clerk Debbie Watkins said: "Francis is one of our regulars and always comes in telling us jokes. He really deserves it."
