BLACKPOOL'S footballers face an enforced early season break from the league programme - giving boss, Colin Hendry, plenty to think about.

Wrexham's international call-ups mean Saturday's game at Bloomfield Road has been postponed, so Blackpool's next league action is the visit to Hull's new KC Stadium on September 11.

Hendry has moved to fill the gap with a behind-closed-doors friendly on Friday against undisclosed opposition, which is expected to feature a number of triallists as well as first-team players.

However, there is no immediate sign of Richie Wellens' anticipated departure. A swap deal involving Bristol City's Christian Roberts fell through this week and a £50,000 bid from the Robins has also been rejected.

Hendry confirmed this week that Manchester United have a 50 per cent sell-on clause for Wellens, making a cash deal unlikely.

The manager has also admitted he is seeking at least three new players for the heart of the team - a central defender, midfielder and striker to bring 'strength and agression' to his team.

One player who would fit that description is Hendry's former colleague, David Batty, but, despite weekend newspaper reports, Batty has not been asked to come out of retirement to help the Seasiders.

Blackpool's under-fire defenders at least have a clean sheet under their belts now after a useful goalless draw at Peterborough on Monday.

Veteran Posh striker, Andy Clarke, should have put his side ahead twice in the first half but, at the other end, Blackpool had several chances to grab all three points, with Scott Taylor and Mike Flynn seeing efforts well saved by Mark Tyler.

That partially erased memories of another dismal Bloomfield Road Saturday. It all started so well when, for the first time this season, the Seasiders took the lead.

John Murphy headed down a free-kick by home debutant, Paul Edwards, which Scott Taylor put past visiting keeper, Marlon Beresford.

They were able to hand that lead, relatively comfortably, for the first half, but the pressure built in the minutes after the break and it came as no surprise when Steve Howard headed home.

Lively winger, Ahmet Brkovic, broke clear of the defence and beat Lee Jones to a through ball before slotting home.

Blackpool pressed, with loanee midfielder, Michael Flynn, seeing one powerful effort from the edge of the area well saved by Beresford, but, with the Seasiders searching for an equaliser, a fast breakaway let Brkovic in for his second.

Blackpool look set to face a safety probe over the state of their temporary east stand after a Luton fan fell through broken wooden flooring while celebrating the second goal in Saturday's match. That part of the stand was sealed off and visiting fans were moved to another area.
