MOTORISTS who park on double yellow lines and break other parking regulations will have to change their habits from Monday when the Lancashire-wide 'ParkWise' initiative launches.

The scheme will see parking restrictions enforced by local councils rather than the police. Motorists who had previously got away with parking infringements can now expect to receive a penalty charge of up to £60, or £30 if paid within 14 days.

The county council is administering the scheme but decisions on how many parking attendants will patrol the towns, and where they will focus their efforts, will be taken by the local district councils.

County Councillor Jean Yates, Lancashire's cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "ParkWise is all about improving road safety, cutting congestion and managing the highways more efficiently. "

Parking Attendants will NOT be rewarded for issuing more tickets.

They will only issue a ticket where there is a parking infringement - motorists who do not park on waiting restrictions have nothing to fear!

The scheme has already been publicised in the media, but more information is available at www.parkwise.org.uk - or in the leaflets available at local libraries and County Information Centres.
