IT'S some time since Leyland last reached three figures and they were dismissed twice for under 100 at the weekend, once in the league and once in the league cup final.

They travelled up the M6 to Cumbria on Saturday and came back with a chastening defeat from Netherfield.

The home side batted first and declared on 184 for 2, with professional Dale Berkenstein unbeaten on 100.

In reply Leyland were bowled out for 98 with captain Alec Mercer top scoring with 43.

Leyland Motors must have thought they were in with a chance of victory after scoring 252 for 4 off their allotted overs at home to Lancaster but they were unable to bowl out the visitors.

Atif Ashraf was in scintillating form for the Motors as he drove and cut the Lancaster attack all over the ground for 144 not out in an innings containing 26 fours and two sixes.

Rounding (18) and Aspinwall (20) held the other end as their pro took control of the innings.

It was the turn of captain David Makinson to turn on the style when Lancaster went into bat and he soon sent four of the first five batsmen back to the pavilion for just 28.

Phillips (41) Burstow (23), and Parkinson (32) managed to keep the home attack at bay despite a spell of three for 7 by Aspinwall at the end of the innings.

On Sunday Leyland were soundly beaten in the final of the Thwaites League Cup when they travelled to Darwen.

The home side batted first and scored 214 for 5 with Cordingley top scoring with 99 not out.

He was well supported by pro' Semple who scored 49.

Leyland were again unable to pass the hundred mark, being bowled out for just 94, leaving Darwen the victors by a 120 run margin.
