A SIX-KILOMETRE cycle route through Blackburn is to open tomorrow in a bid to get more people on their bikes.

The new route will connect Witton Park with Lower Darwen, via the Darwen Valley park, Ewood Park, Mill Hill and Higher Croft.

The 5.6km route is part of a strategy to promote safe access to green areas and leisure facilities, and means people should be able to cycle in relative safety to Blackburn Rovers' ground.

It has been funded through grants from the sustainable transport charity Sustans and the National Lottery, and feeds into the National Cycle Network - an 8,500-mile-long walking and cycling network.

People are now being urged to turn up for the opening at Witton Park Visitor Centre tomorrow.

If they ride the route on the first day, they will receive a certificate.

Coun Dorothy Walsh, Blackburn with Darwen Council's executive member for culture, leisure and sport, said: "This is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to the borough, both young

and old, to ride through some of the most beautiful areas of the borough and get fit at the same time."

The opening takes place at 11am. For further details, call 01254 585368.
