NEWCASTLE United fans are warming to the idea of Graeme Souness taking over as their new manager.

Five days after the shock news of Sir Bobby Robson's successor was announced, supporters making their way to the clash with the club the Scot left behind on Saturday were in a cautiously upbeat mood.

William Smith said: "Graeme Souness was a fantastic footballer and knows a footballer when he sees one, so in that respect he was as good as what was available. A lot of people were surprised but they're coming round."

Frank Robson said: "I'm happy with the appointment. He'll put his foot down and stop all the nonsense that's been going on here. We'll win a cup this year with him."

However, the supporters made no secret of the fact that Souness wasn't their number one choice.

Paul Greener said: "He wasn't the first choice and I don't think he is any of the fans' choice but results will win us over. If he has a good cup run we'll love him but he has to prove he's a worthy manager."

Bill Rutter added: "He was late being mentioned and everybody seemed to want Steve Bruce. But I think everybody is quite happy now."

Darren Greener said: "You've got to look at Steve Bruce because he's a local lad. I think the majority would want someone local but I don't care as long as we play some attractive football and win trophies after waiting for 30-odd years.

"I wouldn't care if we finished ninth in the league as long as we won the FA Cup."
