STEVE Cotterill reflected on his first home win as Burnley boss and declared: That was for the fans.

Cotterill's Clarets steamrolled Crewe Alexandra thanks to goals from John McGreal, Robbie Blake and Richard Chaplow.

And the Burnley boss said: "That win does everything for this football club. You are always waiting for your first home win and it's so pleasing for the fans.

"They have been terrific ever since me and my staff arrived, so this was for them because we felt we needed one for the fans sooner, rather than later.

"The early goal settled any nerves and then Robbie comes up with a second at just the right time to deflate the opposition.

"You talk about keeping it tight at the start of the game and just before and after half time and the third did it for us because three-nil deficits are hard to come back from. "Naturally then, we drop a little bit deeper and relinquish a bit of the ball, but we still went on and could have scored more."

Cotterill reserved special praise for Ian Moore, who failed to find the target but was instrumental in one of his best displays in a Burnley shirt.

The Clarets striker had a hand in the second and third goals and then drilled a shot off the inside of the post in the closing moments.

Cotterill said: "What we can't do is underestimate Ian because I thought he was outstanding.

"His work rate was amazing and he worked his socks off and harried for everything.

"When you are a striker, your team has won 3-0 and you haven't scored, there is a natural tendency to be upset because you have done all the work and all the running and not got your selfish reward of a goal.

"But I'm a firm believer that you have to work yourself into credit in life and I've told Ian he has worked himself into credit to score a goal somewhere down the line that he maybe won't deserve."

Cotterill was especially pleased with the way his players raised their game following back-to-back defeats to West Ham and then Gillingham.

The enforced 12-day break then left Burnley stewing ahead of a clash Cotterill always anticipated would be a battle.

"This game could have been a real tricky one for us," he admitted. "We were on the back of two defeats and when you play at home, everyone expects you to win.

"No disrespect to Gillingham but that was the case there and, against Crewe, everybody would have been expecting us to win because of the size of our club against Crewe's.

"But they are very well run, very well drilled and this could have been a really dangerous game.

"We needed a couple of goals at the right times, which probably killed them, and a couple of important saves from Danny Coyne.

"If they had got back into the game it could have been very difficult for us. But I just thought the lads were magnificent in their application, effort and some of their play at times. But I would say at times!"
