THE rain at Darwen and Netherfield ensured Fleetwood were home and dry in their pursuit of their first Northern Premier League title since 1985.

Fleetwood came to Darwen requiring just nine point to secure the championship, They were put into bat and were soon in trouble as wickets tumbled in front of their large following.

Sharp bowling from Mercer and Hacking saw them claim two wickets each as Fleetwood were reduced to 42 for four from 16 overs. Mercer's victims included Fleetwood's professional rum machine Marrillier clean bowled for 12.

Clinning offered stiffer resistance as he helped Clough take the score to 64 before he fell to Neil Cordingley for 21.

Clough and Clarke then proceeded to inch Fleetwood to the Championship as the ensured maximum batting points were claimed as they added 96 for the sixth wicket.

Clough (46) eventually fell to Semple, while Clarke finished on 53 not out as the innings closed on 187 for six - young Darwen keeper Clarke claimed three victims on his debut.

The Darwen reply got off to a brisk start as John Cordingley (8) and Grant (26) took the score to 35 without loss from just nine overs before the rains came and washed out the match.

When news came through that Netherfield's game had also been washed out the trophy was presented to the victorious Fleetwood team after spending two years in Darwen's care.

Darwen chairman Peter Lamster said "It was a shame the rain spoiled a good game, we were however pleased to be able to pass the trophy over to a worthy team.

"Fleetwood have won the trophy over a gruelling season and hit form when it really mattered. I look forward to receiving it back next year!"

Chorley's match at Blackpool was abandoned owing to rain after Blackpool had posted 159 for 1 in 44 overs.
