A CAMPAIGN to stop two large wind turbines being installed on the moors above Edgworth has received the backing of the National Trust.

Residents have been protesting against the plans for two 95-metre-high turbines on part of Uglow Farm for some time.

But now their campaign has been given a boost by the news that the National Trust has submitted an objection to the proposals.

Kathryn Rogers, who lives next to the proposed site, said: "We have received an objection from the National Trust against the proposal. They cite their main concern as being the 'undue visual intrusion into the valued landscape of the West Pennine Moors'.

"They also state that 'the height of the turbines and their insensitive siting would exacerbate this impact'.

"This is a welcome objection from the National Trust which maintains support for renewable forms of energy but in the right place."

A decision on the application, submitted by landowners Julia and Angus Dootson, is now expected to be made at the council's planning meeting on October 21.

Mr and Mrs Dootson hope to use the turbines to produce renewable energy as part of a government-funded scheme.

The Say No To Turbines group is planning another public meeting in the near future to inform other residents of the current situation and to get firm commitments from those who can attend the planning meeting in October.
