I FEEL I must comment on the closure of Queen's Park Technology College. As I understand it, the school would close at the end of one term and reopen at the start of the next with a new name and possibly some new staff.
Who dreamed up this idea? What could possibly change - maybe a little new decor, a new name, and some new staff, but the same pupils.
The school has had a bad reputation for a number of years. That is no fault of the teachers or the governors, that is purely and simply down to some of the people who attend that school.
The teachers can only do so much. If a pupil does not want to learn they will not learn.
Indeed, speaking as a parent, we have to take responsibility for the actions and behaviour of our children. We need to take more interest in what they are doing, and as a parent teach them right and wrong, encourage and help them with homework.
So you see it is not just down to the teacher, it is down to all parents to work alongside the teachers and the school and that will help to improve discipline and learning.
Teachers no longer have any authority to discipline, only to teach, so the role of the parent takes on a greater meaning.
It's all too easy to look for a scapegoat. Maybe we should look closer to home.
