MEMBERS of Prestwich Co-op Camera Club were given a specific target for their competition prints and slides this month. They all had to have something to do with glass. Not only that, they had an outside judge -- Bill Edwards -- from Altrincham and Hale Camera Club.
He did a very good job of analysing the entries, suggesting ways to improve their quality and then giving them a mark.
There were 16 slides and Bill had something to say about each of them. Finally, he selected Brian Proctor's "Church Window" in third place. This showed several candles behind an old window.
In first place, he selected two slides. One was from Eddie Evans -- "A Mirrored Wall", which showed the Lowry Centre, reflected and distorted in a window. The other was "Tree of Life" from Angela Honeyford, and it was a stained glass window with modernistic pattern on it.
There were 18 slides to judge. He spent little time going through them first, before putting them up one at a time for us to see while he again made constructive comments.
This time he put three in second place: one was Phil Cohen's "The Vase". With its simple title, this was more than just a simple picture. It stood on a mirror and was well lit to show off all its features.
Next, was Derek Warren's "Aquatic Life". This was a golden bowl with scenes in gold on the outside. Bill said this would have been first if a small correction had been made.
The other in second place was "The Big Apple" from a new lady member -- Marjory Hoyle. This was a glass apple very well lit to pick out the highlights.
In first place, was Vernon Barlow's "Window at Victoria Baths". This was a circular window, exactly symmetrical in the frame and well-lit and printed perfectly.
Bill had several suggestions to make. Bottles and glasses should not be in a straight line. They would look better if one or two contained suitable liquids. The edge of a table or other support looks ugly if it makes a straight line across the picture. He was warmly thanked for his judging abilities and helpful pointers.
Next Tuesday, there will be a Lancs & Cheshire Photo Union monochrome print folio. You are welcome to state your opinions of these by coming to the side door of the Bridge Methodist Hall, behind Radcliffe Library between 7.30 and 8pm.
