SHOPKEEPERS have welcomed the news that a busy town centre street is set to be resurfaced amid complaints that the area was dangerous.
Businesses in Peel Street, home of Accrington bus station, have contacted the council in recent months over the state of the pavement.
A meeting of the town's bus forum was told that since being installed as part of a redevelopment, the pavement had been the scene of several accidents, with shoppers taking a tumble over the uneven surface.
Hyndburn Council are in the midst of a legal wrangle with the contractors but are now to resurface the area and add extra drains.
Coun Brian Walmsley, overseeing the work, said: "With the down-pours that we have been having, it has caused a bit of a problem with water coming off the roofs.
"So there are more drains coming and along that section we are resurfacing the flags that are bad. Something is going to be happening in the next week or two."
Today businesses in the area welcomed the news.
Steve Riley, of Riley's Video and DVDs, said: "I have seen about 20 incidents -- as many as five or six on one day.
"When it was first done it was alright for a few months, but once it started to rain it was a see-saw every time you stood on a slab."
