I WOULD like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who gave me their support following the 'Have a Hart' story in the Citizen (Sept 9).
I have been truly overwhelmed by the response of people from all walks of life who have taken the trouble to come into the restaurant and talk to us - and we have also received some marvellous letters.
To end the tale, the council's highways department is adamant that we must apply for a license at a cost of £251, with no guarantee of success.
I am still no wiser as to why Hart's Restaurant has been singled out in the town, but we must accept council authority.
In answer to the lady who wishes we would install a lift, we would love to be able to do that for our customers but by the time we have paid 17.5 per cent VAT on everything we sell, business tax and more than £1,000 each year to have our bins emptied there is precious little left for investment.
I used to wonder why our high street had so many charity shops, now I know.
Perhaps the Government would consider grants for small businesses to become more accessible to the disabled. After all we make our living largely from the older generation, who visit Morecambe every year.
Violet Milne, Hart's Restaurant, Morecambe.
