RADCLIFFE Boro are bidding to set up a glamorous FA Cup clash against one of the biggest names in non-league football as they prepare to host Moor Green on Saturday writes Peter Collins
Kevin Glendon's side warmed up for this weekend's third qualifying round tie against their Nationwide Conference North opponents with a 3-0 victory at Bamber Bridge.
Victory on Saturday would take Boro through to the fourth qualifying round - the stage of the competition where the Conference National sides enter.
And Glendon believes that his team have a good chance of progressing after Tuesday night's morale-boosting Unibond Premier Division victory at Irongate.
He said: "Moor Green haven't been doing so well, but it's the FA Cup and it's an opportunity to get into the round where the Conference teams join in, so I don't think that their league form will make a lot of difference.
"We needed that win on Tuesday to keep in touch with everything that's going on in our division. This cup tie means another Saturday without a league game, which puts us further behind in our Unibond programme - so Tuesday night's win was very important for us.
"We're looking forward to the cup game, and we've certainly got the players to get us through.
"They are a big, strong side, so we'll just have to make sure we're alive at corners and free kicks."
Radcliffe's win left Glendon feeling a lot better after last Saturday's forgettable 3-0 defeat at Matlock.
Glendon responded to that defeat by releasing defender James Price, who has since joined Chorley, and bringing in centre-back Paul McGuire from Leigh RMI.
Boro were also boosted at Bamber Bridge by the return of centre-back Paul Challinor, who made his first start in more than a month after recovering from a leg injury.
"Some of the football we played at Bamber Bridge was excellent," Glendon said. "It was a good all-round team performance.
"Danny Hurst pulled off one or two very important saves for us at important times, which is what he is there for.
"But we also created some great chances apart from the three we scored and should have buried them after we scored the second."
But Glendon is still looking to bolster his squad, with an eye on strengthening his defence.
He said: "We need a certain type of defender, with the kind of footballers we've got in the team, but getting hold of that type of defender is difficult.
"We're going to see how the three we have at the moment work together, and if that doesn't work, we'll have to keep looking around."
Kick-off at Stainton Park is 3pm.
