A LADY bowler who helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity has lost her battle against cancer.
Mrs Beryl Marr (68) passed away peacefully at home in Stanley Avenue North, Prestwich, on Sunday morning (Oct 10) after falling ill around 18 months ago.
A member of Prestwich Conservative Club for more than 20 years -- together with her husband Peter -- Mrs Marr was the chairman of the ladies bowling section.
It was in her role as chairman that Mrs Marr encouraged people to donate generously to charity year after year and in March this year the total amount raised by the club to date was around £30,000.
Mr Marr, who is president of the Conservative Club in Church Lane, said: "Beryl was very forthright and sincere."
Some of the groups to benefit from the club's annual fundraising events, were Eyeline, for the partially sighted, Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Besses Boys Band, the Rainbow Trust, Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary and St John Ambulance.
As well as her fundraising activities, Mrs Marr was appointed the first lady vice-president of the club and she enjoyed looking after the gardens surrounding the bowling green, often to be seen "pottering about" the gardens.
She was also a devoted grandmother to her five grandchildren and mother to David and Shelley.
Although Mrs Marr had been unwell for several months she had requested her husband help organise this year's fundraising event on Saturday, November 6.
A Christmas Fair will be held at the club from 1pm to 4pm featuring stalls, tombolas and raffles and all proceeds will go to the 22nd Prestwich Scouts, whose headquarters is situated opposite the conservative club in Church Lane.
Mrs Marr's funeral was held yesterday (Thursday) at Agecroft Crematorium.
