AS a former governor at Queen's Park High, I feel that I am reasonably well qualified to respond to the question 'Who is to blame for the poor standards at Queen's Park?' (LET, October 9).
It is blatantly obvious where the blame lies for the present situation. In football if a team has a run of bad results it is the manager who faces redundancy.
Sometimes they do the honourable thing and resign their post. In most cases they fall on their own sword.
Blackburn with Darwen's Director of Education should quite simply be sacked. Clearly he has never really got to grips with the situation at the school.
Leaving the town hall with him should be the army of alleged school improvement officers. Again their shortcomings and the inadequacy of their action plans did little to transform the situation at the school.
But then what real chance did such plans have when we hear tales of School Improvement Teams refusing to teach or demonstrate how to teach 'difficult' children?
If these advisers, or consultants, fail to lead by example then they too should be removed from office.
The authority is also to blame for their sheer bloody-mindedness in adhering to a policy of inclusion for all pupils. Sadly this does not work.
I have witnessed many incidents where the inclusion of a few disaffected pupils is to the detriment of the education of the many motivated pupils. This is because the hard-working teacher's time is taken up with managing the unruly behaviours of the trouble-makers. Consequently all learning goes out of the window.
I do not expect the Director of Education or his team of visionary acolytes to resign, but I take great umbrage, as do many, at the way in which the teachers at Queen's Park are the scapegoats.
For too long we have heard it trumpeted that Blackburn with Darwen is a Beacon Authority. Even road signs proclaim its Council of the Year status at every available junction.
Queen's Park High was obviously not one of the jewels in the Blackburn with Darwen crown. I wonder whether it was shut down so the authority could retain its Beacon status. I think we should be told.
