INJURY-HIT Golborne Parkside feilded their youngest-ever team in their fixture against Burtonwood but still came away with a super 22-0 win.
Facing a undefeated bigger and older team who, up to Saturday, boasted the best defensive record in Division Three it would have been expected the youngsters to be outplayed
But that was totally the opposite as Golborne kept their bigger opponents pinned in their own half with a massive defensive display.
With out a doubt the efforts of 36-year-old Garry Dooney spurred on his young team mates. Chris Miller, Greg Dale, Chris Woods and Leon Davy were carried forward with his passion.
The half back combination of Andy Simms and Stuart Arkright also ruled the roost.
It took 36 minutes of a pulsating first half before the first score came, and fittingly it came from a set move from a scrum on the Burtonwood line after a big tackle from centre David Hindley caused the Burtonwood fullback to knock on. Golborne loose forward Leon Davy sold an outrageous dummy to romp over for a try goaled by Stuart Arkwright to make the half time score 6-0.
Golborne's defence continued to be the most important part of the game. After more good team work, Leon Davy crashed over for a try goaled by Arkwright to make the score 12-0. A penalty goal from Arkwright extended the lead to 14-0.
Two superb finishes from winger Craig Timmins wrapped up the victory. The first came from a break by Neil Muir and the second after good work from Stuart Nayor.
This Saturday the first team face another challenge away to the second placed undefeated Haydock.
The second team game was cancelled due to a water logged pitch and they have no game this weekend due to the Super League Grand Final.
The Under 18's, also badly hit by injuries, visited Wigan St Cuthbert's in the first round of the BARLA Lancashire Cup and pulled of the shock of the round with a 34-10 victory. Golborne scored tries through John Parr, Antony Irvine, Staurt Gouling 2 plus 7 goals from Goulding.
The Under 15's posted an impressive win away over second placed Culcheth. Down 14-0 at half time they completely turned it round in the second half. Craig Keating scored an unconverted try before Tom Mutch score a try converted by Keating.
Culcheth hit back with an unconverted try and with just eight minutes remaining Golborne looked out of it. But they didn't give up and when Ben Middleton crashed over in the corner to narrow the gap to just four points it was back in the melting pot.
With just two minutes remaining man of the match Keating forced Culcheth into an error and he capitalised on it to race 20 meters for the match winning try goaled by Danny Drury.
The Under 9's, who didn't win a single game last year, picked up their second win in four games with a 24-16 success against West Bank. Tries were scored by Jamie Hillage 3, Daniel Buck 2 and James Melling who took the man of the match with Drew Darbyshire second.
