EVERYONE wants to see the end of the sort of dilapidated Victorian housing which puts East Lancashire high in various deprivation leagues.
Slum conditions are inextricably linked with health and education difficulties as well as other problems associated with poverty.
They also present a depressing image of an area trying to sell itself to employers and investors.
But too often, councils have alienated residents by announcing plans to bulldoze homes without at the same time explaining clearly what will replace them.
Not surprisingly, people are likely to react with anger and fear if they are told their homes will be disappearing but are not given any idea where and how they will be living in the future.
Blackburn with Darwen Council is trying a new approach with residents in the Infirmary area who are being asked for their views on various types of homes including Victorian-style red-brick terraces and more modern airy designs.
Canalside housing, underground parking and play areas are also being discussed.
