ROSSENDALE MP Janet Anderson has given her backing to new legislation meaning large stores have to close on Christmas Day.
The Labour minister for Rossendale expressed her delight after the Christmas Day (Trading) Bill passed its final stage in Parliament last week.
The bill, backed by Usdaw, the shopworkers union means all large stores must be closed on December 25, giving every worker at least one day off at Christmas.
Ms Anderson who has backed the bill from the beginning said the law would ensure the day remains special.
She said: "Even Scrooge gave his staff Christmas Day off. Staff in large retail stores work exceptionally long hours in the run-up to Christmas.
This new law should provide them at least Christmas Day off, to spend with their families."
