I WISH the Nelson residents well in their campaign to keep the 'Lord Nelson Hotel' name for a pub.
This name reflects some of our heritage which is being eroded all the time.
To cheer them up we had a similar dilemma in Burnley a few years ago in our parish of Habergham Eaves.
'The Bull and Butcher' pub, Manchester Road was in all the region's guide books and maps. Not only a landmark where packhorses used to pass - but a part of our local history.
It was taken over by a new brewery and they changed the name to 'The Slaughtered Lamb'. Why? Goodness knows - a horrible title in anyone's language.
The Burnley people - especially local residents - rejected this name and many, I was one, boycotted the pub.
Along then came foot and mouth which is what the brewery must have realised they'd done - and eventually the name was changed back to 'The Bull and Butcher'.
I hope the 'Nelson' battle is won - as it is a worthy name - renowned all over the world.
KATHLEEN BULOCK, Wilkie Avenue, Burnley.
