A CRACKDOWN on beggars plaguing Burnley shoppers has been a major success, according to town centre bosses.
The campaign - aimed at the half-a-dozen regular beggars in the town centre - was launched in May in a bid to persuade people not to hand over cash.
The crackdown included a poster campaign urging people to give to charities and has been backed up by police action against begging.
Town Centre warden Helen Wiggan said the moves had made the town centre a better place. She added: "The problem has reduced considerably. We are dealing with far fewer incidents involving beggars."
In the three months from April to June wardens had dealt with more than 100 incidents involving beggars. In the three months from July to September that had dropped to 21.
