THERE was a tight match this week in the Arthur Booth B Section between Radcliffe St Mary's A and Bury Snooker B.
The match finished 6-3 to the away team but there was only 18 in the aggregate eventually. The first two frames were shared with Jim Coleman winning for Radcliffe, then Michael Berry for Bury. Pete Dudley and Morris Ryder then put Radcliffe into a 3-1 lead, with Pete beating Mark Foulger on the black. Harold Marney won a tight game in the fifth for Bury Snooker, to pull the match back to 3-2, Lee Marney then produced a brilliant 67 break in the final frame against Geoff Farrington to win by 16 points and take the aggregate.
The two teams promoted from the C Section last year, Whitefield Snooker and Elton Lib A met at Whitefield and, despite an early hiccup, Whitefield ran out 7-1 winners. Darren Howarth won the opening frame comfortably for Elton, but after that, Whitefield took the next five frames and ran out easy winners.
It was not so easy when Walshaw B welcomed Radcliffe Central B. Bill Whittaker won the opening frame for Walshaw on the black against Neil Craven. Radcliffe then hit back and won the next three frames, which included a win for John Bromelow against Derek Bury, who had a nice 29 break. Steve Brooks and Barry Smith took the final frames for Walshaw, Steve Brooks being in scintillating form. Those last two frames were enough to give Walshaw the aggregate and a 5-3 win.
It was a similar result at Elton Lib D where Huntley C were the visitors. Elton took the opening three frames quite easily, with Mark Routledge and Shamus King doing well. Huntley then came back strong and took the last three frames, though big difference was that they were all blackball games and were not enough to make any impact on the aggregate.
Win of the week in this section came in the home derby between Tottington C and B teams. The tone for the match was set in the opening frame when Tom Mawdsley beat Ted Nadin 63-37. The home team then carried on in the same vein and took the remaining five frames, although two frames were won on the black, those being the frames between Ash Pilsworth and Pete Woroniak and Pete Wilding and Dave Brookes.
In the C Section, Radcliffe St Mary's B were the visitors to Stanley A and took the opening frame thanks to Simon Bowkett. Charlie Goddard then levelled the match at 1-1 with a superb performance in beating another old campaigner, Jim Garvey. Radcliffe took the next two frames before Tony Filidoro pulled one back for Stanley. The final frame was won by Ste Parry for Radcliffe, 67-41 but this was not enough to secure the aggregate and the match ended 4-4.
Seedfield Bowling had a long trip to Buchanan's and came away with nothing to show but extra miles on their cars. Buchanan's raced to a 5-0 lead although there was never more than 20 points in four of these frames. Chris Morgan won the last frame for Seedfield but it was too late to have any impact on the match.
Bury Snooker D welcomed Stanley B, despite the farce they faced in the opening match of the season. Mark Turner and James Fletcher took the opening two frames for Bury Snooker and built up a healthy aggregate lead. John Booth took the next frame for Stanley with the help of more than 20 points in fouls by Danny Brejwo. Dave Bennett took the next to level the match. Mark Patton had another good win to give Stanley the lead before Mike Nortley levelled things up against Pete Appleton. On a count back it proved that Mark Patton's big win had been decisive and Stanley took the aggregate.
Radcliffe Central A had a good home win against Hollins where Alan Evason was the only winner for Hollins, and there was a good break by Zia Aslam in the opening frame, and a century by Alan Green in the second for Radcliffe.
Huntley B were at home to Bury Bridge and had a relatively comfortable win, running out 6-2 winners. The first four frames were shared, Kevin Martin and Pete Croft winning for Huntley, and Wayne Usher and Graham Spencer winning for Bury Bridge. Shaun Hodgkinson won a black ball game for Huntley in the fifth and James Gill finished off the match to give Huntley the win.
The final match in the section was at Tottington A where Walmersley C were visitors. In the opening match, Mike Brejwo beat Russ Duplain, helped by 20 and 18 breaks. Chris Graham also lost before John Mawdsley pulled one back. This was not enough and Walmersley won two of the last three frames and took the match.
In the A Section, Huntley A were pulled up short when visitors Bury Snooker C, won 6-3. Daz Harrison got the home team off to a good start before Bury won the next two frames. John Deardon levelled for Huntley before Jed Ridgeley had a great win against Kevin Newbury. Ralph Claxton took the final frame for Huntley but not by a sufficient enough margin to take the aggregate off Bury Snooker.
Walmersley D had a good win against Salisbury A with the latter's only win coming in the final frame.
Last year's runners-up, Elton Lib B, faced local rivals Elton Fold, and ran out 6-2 winners. A century and a 59 break in the opening frame by Craig Steadman against Ryan Joyce, set the tone for the match which had five other breaks over 25 in it. Elton Fold's only winners were Lee Cockcroft and Gerry Anderson. Elton Lib's B team visited Fishpool, who managed to get a team together and finished 7-2 winners.
The home team won the opening frame convincingly and the final frame in the same manner, .
