FAKES aren't fun, say Bury's trading standards chiefs.
Officers claim counterfeit goods are usually of inferior quality and come in a variety of forms, such as perfumes containing urine; condoms that don't work; inflammable children's clothes; dangerous toys; and fake power tools that can kill.
Angela Lomax, the council's principal trading standards officer, said: "When we think about fakes and copies, most of us think of CDs and DVDs and poor quality counterfeit designer gear but todays counterfeiters have no qualms about using their talents to produce fakes that put our safety at risk."
Ruth Orchard, director general of the Anti-Counterfeiting Group which represents many of the major brands, said: "Consumers need to be aware of the risks involved in those apparent bargains on offer in discount stores.
"We urge consumers to boycott counterfeits; its the only way to foil the global network of criminals which controls this hugely profitable trade in fakes."
