SHAKERS midfielder Terry Dunfield has turned down a chance to join Nationwide Conference giants, Carlisle United.

The Cumbrian side, looking to bounce back into the Football League at the first time of asking after relegation last season, were keen to take the Canadian international to Brunton Park, but the former Manchester City man has pledged his allegiance to the Shakers.

Bury boss Graham Barrow is more than happy that Dunfield is staying at Gigg Lane and reckons the 22-year-old can play an influential part in the rest of the season.

To prove the point, he came off the bench midway through the second half of Saturdays 1-1 home draw against Rushden & Diamonds and looked in fine form, orchestrating a timely revival after the Shakers had gone a goal behind.

No doubt former Bury boss Andy Preece, who plays for the Cumbrians, will have told manager Paul Simpson all about the talented schemer, but fortunately for Bury Dunfield sees his future at Gigg Lane.

"Carlisle got onto us about the possibility of them signing Terry and we let him know about their interest," explained Barrow.

"But Terry decided he wants to stay and battle for his place with us, which says a lot about the lad.

"He wasn't too pleased about not being selected at the weekend, but he showed his character by doing superbly when he came on against Rushden.

"Things haven't always gone well for him since he arrived here, but there's no doubt he is one of the best players at this club when he's on top of his game."
