BACUP'S Sam Aston stole the show at last night's glittering National TV Awards to scoop most popular newcomer for his part in Coronation Street.
Eleven-year-old Sam, who says he was dreading the big night, said: "I'd like to thank the people who have been watching and who voted for us. You've made us dead happy."
The pint-sized actor helped the ITV1 soap celebrate a treble at the awards held at London's Royal Albert Hall. Suranne Jones, who plays Karen McDonald, won most popular actress, and the Street was named most popular serial drama.
Sam, who beat Patsy Kensit to the prize, is youngest ever winner of the award and was given a special mini-microphone to make his acceptance speech.
"I'd like to thank all the people who voted for me and the cast and crew of Coronation Street. I've had a mint year," he beamed.
Bolton's Olympic boxing hero Amir Khan presented Sam with his award.
Even Ant and Dec, who took to the stage after Sam to win most popular entertainment presenter, were in awe of the young star with Ant asking the audience: "How do you follow Chesney?"
Sam has eight brothers and sisters, and four of them have already had parts in the soap.
The Haslingden High School pupil, who is taking a well earned rest from his school work in half-term, is now looking forward to spending a few days with his older sister Emily in London.
