A ZERO-TOLERANCE approach to domestic violence should be adopted, according to Bury South MP Ivan Lewis.
The Education Minister is backing police in their drive to increase awareness and reduce under-reporting of the crime. The issue of domestic violence was raised at a recent meeting with Radcliffe Township Inspector Steve Clark.
Mr Lewis said: "Any civilised community must have zero-tolerance for violence which too often takes place behind closed doors and leaves women and children vulnerable and living a life blighted by fear and violence. Chief Superintendent Gary Shewan, divisional commander of Bury Police, said: "The police are committed to tackling the misery domestic violence brings. We are doing this by improving the services, from the first officer attending a crime, through to the care and support offered to help people exit violent relationships."
He added: "We believe that we are already making a real difference to people's lives."
Victims of domestic violence are urged to seek practical help and advice by calling the Bury police specialist domestic violence officers on 0161 856 8064 or, if they prefer not to involve police or remain anonymous, call the freephone 24-hour domestic violence helpline on 0808 200 0274.
