THE May Queen and her retinue pose for the camera outside St Alban's RC Church, Blackburn.
The year is 1942 and this group of seven-year-olds from St Alban's mixed infants, had been chosen to take part in the annual May procession.
This photograph of 28 little 'angels' all in their finery belongs to John Fleming of Whalley, who is standing next to the little queen on the right.
John has identified her as Mary Hindle, while the three lads to the right of him he reckons are Ken Lucas, Robert Davies and George Mercer.
Other people he thinks he can recognise are Lionel Rigby, fifth from the left on the back row and Albert Greenwood, third from the right, also at the back.
John thinks the girl with her chin up, in the middle of photograph, was called Rawcliffe or similar, but he can't remember her first name.
The procession, organised by the nuns, involved a parade around the church when the May Queen crowned a statue of Our Lady with flowers.
Said John: "We were chosen for the procession as we had recently taken our first Holy Communion. We certainly all look the part and I think our outfits would come from Johnny Forbes outfitters in Northgate; everyone went there in those days."
