WITH the first team's Lancashire Cup tie against BAE Systems Barrow was called off early Saturday morning due to a waterlogged Sandgate Road pitch, the attention was switched to Liam Byrne's reserve team who were away to Wythenshawe Amateurs, who boasted a 100 per ent record.
Byrne took advantage of no first team fixture to include Marvin Walters at centre half and Ashley Hoolichan up front, in place of the unavailable Steve Orrell, but otherwise it was the same team that defeated Monton Amateurs the previous weekend.
The game began at a cracking pace with Heys playing fast attacking football and they went close in the eighth minute when Tom Walsh's strike from the edge of the box was pushed on to the post by Buckley in the Ammies goal.
Hoolichan returned the ball back into the box and Brad Barrington, with the goal at his mercy, managed to put it wide.
Five minutes later he made up for his miss when he was brought down in the box and Lee Bushell stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to give Heys the lead.
It was at this stage that Heys took their foot off the gas and allowed Ammies to get back into the game, and but for a couple of out standing saves by Roberts and excellent defending from Shawe, Heys may have gone into the half-time without their slender lead.
The second half started much the same as the first half had ended, with Ammies on the attack and manager Byrne berating his back four for playing too deep.
Unfortunately his pleas went unheard and Smith scored at the back post in the 55th minute to bring the scores level.
Worse was to follow ten minutes later when John Cunningham gave a free-kick away on the edge of the box and Philips bent it into the top corner to give the home side the lead.
But instead of letting their heads drop Heys took the game to Ammies and were rewarded in the 75th minute when they were given a penalty for handball.
Bushell stepped forward and converted his second spot-kick of the game to make things all square.
Further chances fell to Hoolichan, Carrington and Woodcock, but unfortunately they were spurned, and perhaps upon reflection a draw was a fair result.
HEYS: Roberts, Carrington, Shawe, Walters, Riley, Walsh, Cunningham, Monks, Bushell, Hoolichan, Barrington. Subs: Woodcock, Hunter and Byrne.
