BLACKPOOL is looking to casinos for its future and the Lake District is introducing speed restrictions on its waters - so surely there has never been a better time for Lancaster to move heaven and earth in a bid to attract visitors, particularly young families.
So what do we get? The cancellation of the one event that has for years been a resounding success for Morecambe and plans for prime land in the centre of the resort which certainly fail to stir the enthusiasm.
Already we have seen valuable sea front land taken up by a supermarket and now we hear about additional housing. That is just about the last thing we need.
Nature has provided Morecambe with a view many would die for. Now, following the demolition of Frontierland, we have the ideal opportunity to take advantage of it and build the sort of recreational facilities holidaymakers want.
However, at a time when places like Manchester and Liverpool are getting rave notices for their revamps. we seem to be going the opposite way.
For instance, despite having extra street wardens on patrol we see more and more litter, vandalism and evidence of selfish dog owners.
It would be interesting to know how many of these morons have been prosecuted by wardens in the resort in recent months.
