Leigh RU 20 Wilmslow 24: LEIGH RU lost their first league match of the season to undefeated table toppers Wilmslow on a heavy pitch saturated by overnight rain.
Wilcox opened the scoring for Leigh with an early penalty before Wilmslow equalised with a similar effort.
Wilcox added a second penalty for Leigh but the visitors early pressure was proving hard to contain and a failure to clear a defensive scrummage allowed Wilmslow to to crack the Leigh defence for a converted try and a halftime score line of 6-10.
The Leigh forwards worked hard to get a foothold in the game but a lack of cohesion and concession of too many penalties prevented them from mounting any effective attack.
Wilmslow produced a well worked driving maul for a converted try and a 6-17 point lead.
The introduction of substitutes Lee and Liku and a reshuffling of positions gave Leigh a better attacking option. A determined passage of play by the Leigh pack saw the ball re-cycled for Lee to feed Oldham to score and a Wilcox conversion reduced the deficit to 13-17.
With both sides going for a winning score Wilmslow produced another well worked try and conversion. Bentham responded for Leigh with a late converted try but the final whistle saw the visitors maintain their undefeated record.
