I NOTE with interest recent letters concerning the waste transfer station at Fernhill, Bury.

The facility has been there for many years and has a reputation for being a well-managed site. This should not be associated with the ready mix concrete works nearby, where the problems are being addressed by council officers. It is untrue to suggest that these problems have been a focus of attention at the East Bury Area Board for a considerable time.

Certainly the residents of the travellers' site have recently complained about the concrete works at an area board meeting, and directly to their councillors. We have visited the site and discussed the problem, but to imply - as so-called "Friend of the Community" does - that we are dragging our feet, is far from the truth.

With regard to a new site for the travellers, it should be obvious that it is impossible to find a site, make the appropriate plans, get planning approval and construct a facility all in a matter of weeks.

It is easy to criticise and complain, but I notice that "Community Friend" does not suggest any solution. I must, therefore, ask what is the motive here? Is it genuine concern - or is it political opportunism?
