CLITHEROE were knocked out of the UniBond League Cup as their hosts booked a trip to Chorley in the next round.
Leon Mike should have opened the scoring in the early stages of this dual between last season's North West Counties League title rivals but shot wide when well placed.
However, midway through the first half the home side took the lead through Chris Downey as his weak header somehow found a way past a flat footed Kris Richens.
Clitheroe's only real opportunity saw a Steve McDonald shot pushed just wide before half-time then Gary Jackson rounded the Mossley goalkeeper but shot into the side netting.
Mossley doubled their lead when the referee failed to spot a foul on manager Lee Sculpher and Leyton Slack took full advantage to score.
Adam Morning was a constant threat on the left hand side for Mossley and on the hour mark he found himself with the freedom of the pitch to enable him to fire in an accurate cross, which Shaun Dootson fired home.
Clitheroe failed to learn their lesson and moments later Morning again found himself in acres of space to provide a simple finish for Downey.
Slack added his second moments later as he beat the offside trap to complete a miserable evening for the Blues.
