SOME of the brightest hopes in amateur boxing across the North West are to feature in a tournament at Lancaster's Ashton Hall.
Following the Olympic success of Bolton teenager Amir Khan, interest in amateur boxing has reached new heights, with children signing up every day at clubs across Lancashire.
Lancaster Boys Club is no exception - and so on December 14 will be promoting a tournament featuring 12 bouts between boxers aged from 11 to 25.
There will be a full team from Lancaster, including talented juniors such as Phil Fury and Alex Varey alongside ever-improving seniors Calvin White and Omah Benerley.
There will also be leading young amateurs from across the North West taking part.
Lancaster Boys Club, located on Dallas Road, has a rich boxing tradition with a number of locals - Barry Day, Alan Lamb, Frankie Taylor and the McCabe brothers - going on to take regional and national honours. The event is organised by Alan McCabe, who is now an England coach.
Doors will open open at 7pm on December 14 for the Ashton Hall event, with the first bout at 7.45pm. Tickets are £10 per head. There is a bar and refreshments.
All funds raised on the night will go to help the club stage activities for all young people.
For tickets or to sponsor the event, call Colin Hewitt on 01524-32020.
