BURNLEY boss Steve Cotterill insisted last night's stunning victory at Leeds United was payback time for the fans.
The Clarets bounced straight back from the heavy weekend defeat at QPR to stun the former Premiership club at Elland Road with a gritty fightback after going a goal behind in the 12th second.
Lee Roche's first goal in 15 months and on-loan Richard Duffy's second senior strike, his first for Burnley, earned a 2-1 win that catapulted the Clarets back up the Championship table.
And Cotterill insisted: "We slightly put the record straight last night. We still have 29 more league games, but we owed that performance to our supporters and to Burnley Football Club.
"But more importantly the players owed it to themselves. We had a steely determination to do well and we have to make sure we have that in every game now, because we didn't have it against QPR."
Burnley's stunning victory was achieved with five first team regulars missing, including Danny Coyne and Richard Chaplow, who were expecting to discover more precise details of their lengthy lay-offs later today.
Cotterill added: "To come to a great club like Leeds, with the problems we had coming into the game, just makes this fantastic for everyone connected with the club.
"It's a great credit to our right backs because we had three playing and only one in their rightful position.
"I telephoned (Portsmouth manager) Harry Redknapp and told him I was thinking of playing Richard Duffy on the left wing and he said 'You can play him in goal if you like'.
"I replied 'don't say that - I might have to yet!'
"John McGreal was also in the wars because he had a shoulder and neck injury coming into the game, then he tweaked his knee and then he went over on his ankle.
"He must have run over a black cat and we are going to have to pad him up and not let him go anywhere for a couple of days.
"But he showed tremendous character and courage, as did the rest of the lads in a great team performance.
"A small word for James O'Connor because he came in and worked his socks off and we need that if we haven't got Richard Chaplow.
"But we could end up going right through the team. The really pleasurable thing for me was that we kept the ball.
"You don't want Leeds to build up a head of steam against you and we managed to avoid that.
"The supporters were also magnificent and it was nice to send them home a lot happier than last Saturday.
"It was a great night and I thought we played some great football and arguably could have scored two more goals."
Matchwinner Duffy, 19, added: "It's only my second goal and obviously it's a great buzz - a dream come true really.
"I've never played on the left wing before in my life, but I've played right midfield so it was just a case of going to the opposite side and backing your judgement.
"I scored the winning goal, but this was all about the team performance and the great thing is we didn't panic after going a goal down so early.
"It could have rattled us, but we kept going and I was lucky enough to get the winner."
