ATHERTON Colls went down by the odd goal last Saturday at home to Congleton Town but had only themselves to blame in a match which on the balance of play they had more than enough chances to win.
The local side started off totally in control and the Congleton keeper had to be on top form to keep the scores level. Both Anthony Johnson and Lee Bowles spurned good chances and they went a goal behind on 25 minutes totally against the run of play. A cross from the right found Scott Williams in oceans of space and he had time to control it before firing the ball home.
The second half was almost a carbon copy of the first with Colls making and squandering chances and they were made to pay again when Congleton made it 2-0 on 54 minutes. This time it was a cross from the left and unmarked Kevin Higham simply headed the ball home from close range.
Undaunted Colls continued to attack and Nick Fisher should have scored but the visitors keeper somehow saved it.Chris Dalton did pull a! goal back on 81 minutes with a fierce shot but the all important equalizer just would not come.To add insult to injury,Andy Walker was sent off in injury time for verbal abuse.
Colls are away this weekend in the prestigious League Challenge Cup against Squires Gate (Backpool ) and they will have to be sharper in front of goal if they are to progress to the next round.
