A 92-year-old woman was killed by a car as she crossed the road outside her home.
Great-grandmother Annie Gerrard was crossing Warrington Road, Leigh, when she was struck by a red Peugeot on October 23, 2003, an inquest in Bolton heard.
Mrs Gerrard was thrown over the roof of the car and slid down the passenger side window, landing next to the pavement.
She suffered multiple injuries including a fractured pelvis and skull. She was declared dead an hour later at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
Sharon Boardman, the driver of the red Peugeot, told the inquest she was driving along Warrington Road on her way home when she heard a "bang".
She looked in her mirror but did not at see anything. She stopped further down the road when she noticed people gathering and other cars slowing down.
Mrs Boardman said she was driving below the speed limit of 30mph and the weather had been sunny, causing her to put her sun visor down.
Eyewitness Kieron Hook said in a statement: "I saw no brake lights come on until the car had hit the old lady crossing the road."
The inquest heard Mrs Gerrard was a retired cable worker and widow of Frank Gerrard.
Coroner Jennifer Leeming recorded a verdict of accidental death.
