A VAN collided with the central reservation of the M61, causing rush-hour tailbacks last night.

Southbound lanes were closed near Junction 8 at Chorley while police began to clear the scene at about 3.30pm yesterday. A male driver was taken with minor injuries to Chorley Hospital and left later.

All lanes were open by 5pm but tailbacks continued throughout rush hour.

Police in Haslingden are trying to trace a van driver who may have caused an accident on the Grane Road yesterday morning. The male driver of the van had apparently stopped at a house close to the Clough Head picnic site, Haslingden, to ask for directions. A private hire taxi approaching the scene was unaware of the slow moving traffic and crashed into the back of a Ford Escort van, which ended up on its roof.

Police want to trace the driver of the van that caused the obstruction. Anyone with any information is asked to call PC Mark Newton on 01706 237528.
