IT is somewhat of a coincidence with Remembrance Sunday just around the corner that the government decides to release its 'Passports for the Aged' scheme.
All those born before September 2, 1929, are eligible for a free passport, this generous act is in recognition of the sacrifices made by WW2 veterans and civilians.
Last year 18,400 people over the age of 75 died because they couldn't afford to pay for adequate heating, this in itself should tell the government that pensioners cannot afford to go abroad on the pittance of a pension that they are allowed.
Had 18,400 domestic animals died because of the cold there would have been a public outcry.
Much has been said over the past few years about the atrocities and loss of life caused by terrorists, yet here on our own doorstep we turn a blind eye to the hardships suffered by our own pensioners.
The best we can do is offer them a 'Passport to Nowhere.'
J ALLAN (Mr), Rothesay Road, Blackburn.
