PLANS to re-introduce the balcony at Blackburn's Thwaites Empire Theatre are a step closer after bosses secured more than half of the £150,000 needed for the project.
Building work, which will add another 140 seats to the Aqueduct Road venue, is due to begin within days.
But the theatre is still looking for sponsors to come forward to secure the remaining £70,000 by becoming part of the venue's 'rogues gallery'.
Comedian Ken Dodd became the theatre's first rogue earlier this year when he pledged the box office takings of a performance there towards the new balcony.
And stand-up comic Justin Moorhouse, famous for playing Young Kenny in hit comedy series Phoenix Nights, has just become the theatre's 75th rogue, after performing there in October.
Businesses, individuals and even Witton Park High School have sponsored the project and will have their pictures in the gallery at the theatre.
It is hoped that the balcony will be completed by July next year if the funding is secured.
Mike Berry, the theatre's project director, said: "It has been a real community effort, which has demonstrated the spirit of the people.
"We have had donations from local businessmen, from acts that we have had at the theatre and even a school.
"We are over half way there with the funding and have been delighted with the public's response to the project.
"We are just hoping more people can come forward so we can raise the rest of the money needed for the project and up the capacity to 320 seats."
The theatre is to remain open throughout the renovation. Four large support columns will be in place by January to raise the balcony at both sides of the building.
Anyone who would like to make a donation for the balcony can phone Mike on 07931639798.
