I NOTE with astonishment the comments of Jim Eagle (Letters, October 8) regarding the "fight to retain the market in its present position".

He gives a special "thank-you" to, among others, the Lib Dems. But is this not the same Jim Eagle who was a Lib Dem candidate in the recent elections? So I suppose that is congratulations to Jim from Jim, at least on this count, since his foray into politics ended in defeat, not victory.

On June 10 all councillors put themselves to the electors of Bury. I must remind him that despite the market traders 50,000 mystical supporters, we were returned to run the council. Obviously, they did not believe the market traders' claims to have policies for all areas of council administration from their experiences of running individual market businesses.

Could it also be that the silent majority are anxious to see that new jobs, new opportunities and new attractions for residents and visitors alike are brought to our borough?

Jim and his colleagues could not persuade the electors to support them. So having failed at the ballot box, Jim now says we should resign, even though we have the support of the electorate. Hardly logical thinking but then Jim is a Lib Dem!

COUNCILLOR JOHN BYRNE

leader of the council.
